As an American, I am proud to see my generation and the younger generation in this country taking a stand…symbolically.
Ok, maybe some people don’t agree with or comprehend why Colin Kaepernick and others are kneeling or sitting down during the national anthem. Maybe some people are in denial about the history of America’s foundation and the national anthem.
However, no American should be confused about knowing that those who are protesting during the anthem are exercising their RIGHT as Americans. These athletes are opening the conversation about an issue that they want to be addressed. We have FREEDOM in America. Our country was founded on this principle and this is what our men and women in uniform are fighting for. We are not living in a dictatorship, let’s not start going down that road.
Americans will not always agree on every issue, but as fellow Americans, we should respect everyone’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We should respect an athlete’s right to not only play the sport they love, but speak on issues that impact them, their community, and our world. People have been asking supporters of #BlackLivesMatter to protest peacefully, as if no one has been doing that already. It can’t get any more peaceful than sitting or kneeling. Would it be better if they were protesting another social issue? And, what’s wrong about protesting police brutality?
Can anyone really explain how Americans protesting an injustice that IS happening in America before the start of an American sporting event is somehow un-American?
