This rousing acceptance speech from Jesse Williams was about speaking truth and finding solutions to the issues of police brutality and systemic racism in our society. The poetic realness of his words offered inspiration to those with a deep understanding of the Black experience in America and who are fighting for change. His speech was a stand for criminal justice reform, Black cultural empowerment, and reclaiming Black economic power.
It was also a statement informing those who do not WANT to comprehend or support the Black community’s efforts for reform to keep their unconstructive criticism to themselves. Williams said needed to be said and heard. And of course, some people have misconstrued the intent of this speech and are even petitioning for Williams to be removed from the TV show “Grey’s Anatomy.”
It’s ridiculous, but not at all surprising that the magic of his words flew over some people’s heads.
